Experiencing "Werther" at Sydonie Mansion

As last year came to a close, while many began considering resolutions, I made myself a list of things to bring me out of my comfort zone. On this list was,

  • To See an Opera

It seemed really far-fetched in the moment, going to the opera? Where would I even start? Are there even Operas in Florida? Is that something a 22-year-old is allowed to attend?

I decided to research the idea a bit more, so I found Opera Orlando, and one of their shows caught my eye. “Werther” at Sydonie Mansion. At first, I wasn’t so sure. It was a lot of money that maybe should be put somewhere more responsible, this was super outside my comfort zone, and what would one even wear?

As February pulled to the end, I decided to look again at this event. I had really thought hard about it. It was still a lot of money, but that was in part what I had been saving for, so why shouldn’t I?

So, I did.

I did not get many photos, but the venue was stunning! I had wanted to go on the tour, even purchased tickets but we ran too late, c'est la vie!

The staff was so nice, I had gotten many compliments on the outfit, which was Victorian undergarments, a black corset and a spiderweb skirt I had made. Again, just the entire land and house was breath taking! I told my partner many times, “this place is a wedding venue, you know.” Hint hint

As for the actual Opera, I was completely overtaken. It hardly seemed to be the two and a half hours that it was! All of the performers were incredible and we briefly got to interact with the lead Gabriel Preisser, as well as ran into Thandolwethu Mamba, who portrayed Albert. He got to see me dismayed that I had gotten desert in my water. Preisser gave me phantom vibes as he led us to the desert and drinks, in his bloodied shirt, after the show! I also discovered while writing this that he is in fact, the CEO of Opera Orlando!

The combination of the immensely talented performers, the historic location which we moved around through for each act, as well as the charming staff that used lanterns to direct us to each new spot, it really did feel like you were in the scene with these characters as this story was unfolding! I had overheard others who were more experienced in these shows sharing how unique this event was, as well as how much they were enjoying it. Also heard were many so deeply invested in the story! “She should have kissed him!” Whispered a lady enthusiastically behind where I was sitting.

It was such an incredible first experience at the Opera and I absolutely will be keeping my eyes out for other shows! Thank you to Opera Orlando and those who run Sydonie Mansion.

I am not affiliated with Opera Orlando or Sydonie mansion in any way, I just wanted to share this cool experience!
